Starting Therapy With Me: What It’s Like and How It Works

Starting therapy can feel like a big step.
For some people, it’s something they’ve been thinking about for a while. For others, it comes at a point where something just doesn’t feel quite right anymore… in a relationship, in themselves, or in life generally.
Either way, one of the first questions people usually have is:
“What would it actually be like to work with you?”
How I Work
The way I work is relational.
That means we’re not just looking at symptoms or problems in isolation. We’re looking at what’s happening between you and other people, and how that connects to how you’re feeling.
This might include:
Patterns in your relationships
How you communicate
How you experience closeness or distance
How past experiences are still shaping things now
It’s not about analysing you or telling you what to do.
It’s about making sense of things together.

What Sessions Feel Like
Sessions are a space where things can slow down a little.
There’s no pressure to have everything figured out or to explain things perfectly. Most people start by talking about what’s been happening recently or what’s brought them to therapy.
From there, we begin to notice patterns, make connections, and understand things in a way that feels clearer.
Some sessions might feel reflective. Some might feel emotional. Some might feel like you’re just talking things through.
All of that is part of the process.
The First Session
The first session is really about getting a sense of each other.
We’ll talk about what’s been going on for you, what you’re finding difficult, and what you might want to be different.
You’ll also get a feel for how I work and whether it feels like a good fit for you.
There’s no expectation to go into everything straight away.
It’s a starting point, not a test.
How We Might Work Together
Some people come with something very specific they want to focus on.
Others just know that something isn’t sitting right, but aren’t sure how to put it into words yet.
We can work with both.
Sessions might focus on what’s happening right now, or we might begin to notice patterns that have been there for a long time.
We go at a pace that feels manageable.
Individual, Couples, or Family Work
You might be coming on your own, or with someone else.
I offer:
Individual therapy
Couples therapy
Family work (with adults)
Walk and talk sessions
All of these focus on the same core idea:
Understanding relationships and how they affect you.
Practical Things
Sessions are usually weekly.
They can be:
50 minutes
Or longer sessions (around 1 hour 20 minutes), depending on what you need
Sessions are offered online, and walk and talk sessions are available where appropriate.
We’ll talk through what works best for you.
Who I Work With
I work with adults who want to understand what’s happening in their relationships.
That might be:
Feeling stuck in patterns
Relationship or communication difficulties
Feeling disconnected or overwhelmed
Grief or loss
Family or friendship issues
Wanting things to feel different but not knowing where to start
Getting Started
If you’re thinking about starting therapy, the first step is simply getting in touch.
From there:
You send an enquiry
I’ll ask a few short questions
We arrange a first session if it feels like a good fit
There’s no pressure to commit beyond that.
A Final Thought
You don’t need to have everything worked out before you start.
You don’t need the right words.
You just need a sense that something could feel different… and a willingness to explore that.
If you’re thinking about starting therapy and want a space to make sense of what’s happening, you’re very welcome to get in touch.
